Welcome to Caledonia Training!

High quality, intensive training in working with children who have additional support needs, for:

Working to Support the Challenging Learner

1 in 5 children have additional needs of some description.  Many difficulties currently go undetected, or are wrongly attributed to causes such as poor parenting, poor diet, or malevolent and obstructive behaviour.

In recent years, neuro-science has revealed that many problems derive from subtle differences in brain function and that these can have a big impact not only on the capacity of a child to learn in a conventional educational environment, but on their ability to form and sustain relationships with, friends, family and figures of authority.

What we know now, is that small adjustments in approach can have a very considerable affect on the long-term learning outcomes of these challenging youngsters and this not only gives those working with them the opportunities to generate real change at school, home and elsewhere, but also places upon us the burden of responsibility for equipping ourselves in terms of knowledge and skills, to make these changes happen.

That is where training and continuing professional development (CPD) come in.

Challenging behaviour and learning styles can be changed - but a systematic approach is necessary if the underlying causes are to be identified.  Classroom teachers, support staff and parents can all be empowered to make real differences in the lives of the children that they support, and Caledonia Training strives to make this possible.

Food for Thought

Recommendations from OFSTED's 'Managing Challenging Behaviour' report 2005:

Schools, colleges and PRUs should:
􀂄 focus on improving the quality of teaching and the
provision of an appropriate curriculum that engages the
more difficult pupils
􀂄 do more to improve the literacy and other communication
skills of pupils with difficult behaviour
􀂄 improve systems for tracking academic and social
development, and make better use of this information to
help pupils improve and manage their behaviour
􀂄 provide more systematic training for senior managers,
teachers and assistants in behaviour management and in
child and adolescent development

􀂄 review the way they link with parents
􀂄 underline the need for consistency among staff in the way
expectations of behaviour are set and maintained.
LEAs should:
􀂄 monitor and evaluate schools’ responses to pupils with more
