Course
Outlines:
What is meant by 'autism', 'Asperger's Syndrome' and ADHD?
This course
helps pupils to understand what it is like to
have autistic spectrum and attentional
difficulties. There is a special emphasis
on understanding the complex social skills that
most children need to belong to a peer group,
and the approach throughout, is to enhance
tolerance and reduce the 'fear' of fellow pupils
who may be regarded as different.
The course material has been carefully selected
to avoid a patronising or judgemental tone, and
the workshop is broken into distinct topic and
activity areas so that student can engage with
the subject.
Parents,
teaching and support staff are welcome to
attend.
I have ADHD.
What does it mean?
A fundamental
weakness in current provision is advice to young
people on their own condition. This course
looks at their key concerns by providing, in an
accessible way, the information that they need
to understand the difficulties they face in
their day-to-day lives. We address
problems in the classroom, behaviour, personal
organisation and medication, and look in a very
positive way at how they can build the
resilience that they will need to ensure
positive outcomes later in life. The
approach is positive throughout, and the
workshop conducted in a way that is sympathetic
to the different learning styles of those
involved.
Parents,
teaching and support staff are welcome to
attend.
