COURSE OUTLINE
What is ASD? Aetiology, prevalence, presentation. Common
Co-morbidities. Referral, assessment and post-diagnostic

- meltdowns and tantrums. Effective support strategies for
schools and colleges. Modifying the school environment.

ADHD, ADD and common co-morbidities. Incidence, prevalence and
aetiology. Gene-environment relationships and epigentic
processes. Learning difficulties associated with ADHD.
Behavioural difficulties associated with ADHD. Dyspraxia,
dyslexia, Oppositional Defiant Disorder and Conduct Disorder.
Current controversies. NICE and SIGN clinical guidelines.
Medication and non-pharmacological interventions. Diet,

over the last 100 years? Contributory factors. Risk,
resilience and protective factors. Violence and development.
Causation, association and the impact of residual values on
decision-making. Neuro-developmental adversity and
environmental risk. Attachment/Reactive Attachment Disorder.
Medication and behaviour management. Integrating children with SEBDs
into mainstream schools. Modifying the curriculum.
