Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD)

COURSE OUTLINE
What is ASD? Aetiology, prevalence, presentation.  Common Co-morbidities.  Referral, assessment and post-diagnostic support. Social communication and language deficits. Processing difficulties and weak central coherence.  Challenging Behaviour - meltdowns and tantrums.  Effective support strategies for schools and colleges.  Modifying the school environment.  Relationships, sexuality and adolescence. 

Attention Disorders

COURSE OUTLINE
ADHD, ADD and common co-morbidities.  Incidence, prevalence and aetiology.  Gene-environment relationships and epigentic processes.  Learning difficulties associated with ADHD.  Behavioural difficulties associated with ADHD.  Dyspraxia, dyslexia, Oppositional Defiant Disorder and Conduct Disorder.  Current controversies.  NICE and SIGN clinical guidelines.  Medication and non-pharmacological interventions.  Diet, lifestyle and essential fatty acids.  Adult ADHD.  See a brief outline of recent research into attention disorders from the Journal of Attention Disorders (Abstracts).

Social, Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties (SEBD)

COURSE OUTLINE
 What are SEBDs?  How has our understanding of SEBD changed over the last 100 years?  Contributory factors.  Risk, resilience and protective factors.  Violence and development.  Causation, association and the impact of residual values on decision-making.  Neuro-developmental adversity and environmental risk.  Attachment/Reactive Attachment Disorder. Medication and behaviour management. Integrating children with SEBDs into mainstream schools.  Modifying the curriculum.  Transition planning.

 

INSERVICE TRAINING

In-service training at your school, care home or college.  Half-day, full-day, twilight and extended two-day courses.

             

ACCESS 2008 in Abu Dhabi - Teaching and care staff were trained in behaviour management techniques when working with children who have ASD.

Supporting pupils with learning and behaviour difficulties in the mainstream classroom
Recognising specific difficulties; dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD, autism spectrum disorders and Asperger's syndrome, attachment, sensory impairment.  Modifying the curriculum to support pupils with additional needs (ASNs).  Modifying the environment to support pupils with ASNs.  Staff training and development and relationships within the classroom, department and school.  Home-school links.  Low-level disruption and challenging behaviour.  Raising attainment.  The role of the support department.

Managing challenging behaviour
Identifying the causes of challenging behaviour.  Auditing behaviour.  The crisis cycle - preventing, directing and understanding tantrums and 'melt-downs'.  Building capacity in individual pupils - resilience and coping with 'failure'.  Strengthening relationships with supportive peer groups.  Building nurturing experiences into the curriculum.

Making Effective Use of Classroom Assistants
